Influenza (also called flu) is a very contagious infection of the airways. It affects people of all ages but is especially serious for babies, young children, pregnant women and people with underlying medical conditions. It can require hospitalisation and can cause death.
Annual influenza vaccination is the most effective way to protect yourself and your family from serious disease caused by influenza.
Ideally, you should get your annual influenza vaccine anytime from April onwards for maximum protection in the peak flu season, which is generally June to September. The highest level of protection happens in the first 3 to 4 months following vaccination.
It is never too late to get your vaccination since influenza can circulate in the community all year round.
Free influenza vaccines are provided through the National Immunisation Program and are now available at Moana Medical Centre for the following groups of people.
The South Australian Nasal Spray Influenza Vaccination Program provides an additional vaccine option to protect children aged 2 to less than 5 years against influenza.
For the best protection against current strains, vaccination is recommended annually for anyone over 6 months old. If you are not covered under the National Immunisation Program, you can contact our reception team to arrange a prescription. We will ensure the appropriate flu vaccination is provided for your age and medical circumstances.
It is important to get the influenza vaccine each year, as the virus changes frequently.
